Network Rail charged £20,000 for breaching safety regulations
Network Rail has been found guilty of breaching safety regulations after a train crash in Acton in 2008.
The incident in question occurred on June 24 of that year when workers were sent by Network Rail to make repairs to train line between Acton Main Line and Ealing Broadway. The men accessed the line from Noel Road in West Acton in error as they were not familiar with the area.
Without knowing exactly where they were, the workers believed they were on an isolated section of track when they began their work and set up trolleys on the line.
At 1:04 a First Great Western train heading to Paddington from Reading crashed into the trolleys, the driver having braked after spotting them only moments before. The workers ran to safety, and the passengers of the train had to be evacuated. No one was injured.
Network Rail admitted liability in the case, heard at Isleworth Crown Court on 1 December. They were fined £20,000 and an additional £9,000 in costs.
