Deadline Looms to Comment on Greenock Road Tower Blocks

Local councillors are reminding residents that the last chance to comment on a major development on Greenock Road is approaching.

The scheme which is in the South Acton industrial estate backing on to Weston Road in Chiswick, includes three towers up to 18 storeys high.

Developer De Vere Partners wants to build a mixed-use scheme on an existing industrial and commercial site at 8-10 Greenock Road which it has dubbed the Soap Works. HTA Design has been appointed as the scheme’s architect. The proposal is for an increased amount of flexible industrial space to be reprovided on the ground and first floor of the scheme and 124 flats to be built on the upper floors.

The scheme is adjacent an allotments site and to another residential tower proposed by Henley on Stanley Road which is due to be considered by the borough planning committee.

The Soap Works development consists of a base podium, which houses the industrial and commercial above which there would be three towers of 12, 14 and 18 storeys high. There would be communal landscaped terraces on the 3rd, 12th and 15th floors and an entrance for residents separate from the industrial space as well as a double height café.

The developer is proposing that Greenock Road be made one way to enable safe pedestrian access. In addition, talks have been held between adjoining site owners, including the Stanley Road scheme, who have revised their plans to accommodate a new connection between the sites.

35% of the housing would be classed as affordable by habitable room.

In a statement submitted with the application the developer says, “The building is inspired by the rich heritage of the area, taking queues [sic] from the toughness of the 'motor works' and 'brickfields' juxtaposed with the fabrics and softness of the 'soap suds' to create a design that is unique to place. The high quality materials palette and the carefully considered elevation design look to celebrate this industrial typology. The development of the scheme has undergone a rigorous design process to create a cohesive design approach which will further regenerate the area, benefiting both existing and new residents.”

Cllr Gary Malcolm has already objected to the proposals which are on the border of his Southfield ward.

He says, "I urge everyone to take a look at the details as this application is for a building up to 18 storeys overlooking the immediate area. Although the consultation ends on 3rd May the Council allows views received a little later to be included, before the planning committee make their decision. “

At the time of writing there were 137 comments on the proposal on the Ealing Council planning pages most of which were objections mainly on the grounds of height, density and impact on the nearby allotments. It you wish to comment the application reference is
