A popular free fitness initiative for women in Acton is returning this summer, with registration now open for the June term of Movement on the Mount. The programme, run by local charity Action West London and funded by Sport England, offers four days of weekly exercise sessions at no cost to participants.
Designed to support women of all ages and fitness levels, the project aims to remove financial barriers to physical activity while creating a welcoming, confidence-building environment. All sessions are beginner-friendly and focus on improving both physical health and mental well-being.
June’s timetable features the programme’s most varied line-up to date, with Street Dance on Monday evenings, Body Weight Interval Circuits on Wednesday mornings, Dance Fit on Fridays, and a calming Yoga session every Saturday.
“We are delighted to offer our biggest line-up yet this June,” said Zahra Shah, Project Manager for Movement on the Mount. “With four different types of sessions, there is something for everyone. We welcome all fitness levels, especially those who are just starting their fitness journey.”
Since launching in November 2025, the project has already supported more than 70 women in Acton, and organisers expect to exceed their funder’s targets by the time the programme concludes in October.
Participants say the impact has been transformative. One woman, who joined the sessions while recovering from major surgery, said the programme helped her rebuild strength and confidence. “Four months after my hysterectomy, I felt very low. Taking part in Movement on the Mount encouraged me to begin moving again at my own pace. I gradually felt stronger and more accepting of myself. Being part of a supportive group of women has made a lasting difference to my overall well-being.”
Another participant highlighted the social benefits: “I have made friends and feel fitter. My mental health has improved as a result.”
Data collected by Action West London shows that 85% of attendees report increased physical fitness or strength, while 58% say their mental health has improved. Many also credit the programme with helping to build a stronger sense of community in the W3 area.
This June term is the final block of weekly sessions before the summer break, with organisers planning a series of one-off “fitness fun days” later in the season.
Registration for the new term closes at 9pm on Monday 25 May, and spaces are limited to ensure a supportive class environment. The first session begins on Monday 1 June.
