Forty People Evacuated From Harlech Tower

Fire broke out on the balcony on the seventh floor of the block

Forty people had to be evacuated from Harlech Tower in South Acton this Thursday evening (18 April) after a fire broke out on a seventh floor balcony.

The building, which is best known for doubling as Nelson Mandela Towers in Only Fools and Horses, is scheduled for demolition but remains occupied.

Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters were called to a blaze Park Road East. Part of a five roomed flat on the seventh floor of the 13 storey building was alight with the fire believed to have started on the balcony. Residents had clear the building before the Fire Brigade arrived.

The Brigade was called at 7.40pm and was under control less than an hour later. Fire crews from Acton, Chiswick, Ealing, Hammersmith and surrounding fire stations were at the scene.

When firefighters arrived on scene the fire was very visible with flames coming from the balcony of the flat. The Brigade’s 999 Control centre received 15 calls alerting them to the blaze.
