A 53-year-old man has been arrested after posing as a police officer and then forcing his way into the home of his elderly victim.

The man, who police say lives in the area the crime was committed, seriously assaulted the householder and stole his wallet.

The police were called to the scene on Conway Drive at 9.52pm on Tuesday, 23 June by a neighbour. Response officers arrived shortly after and the victim found at the property clearly shaken and injured. Another unit nearby where tasked to locate the suspect, who they located shortly afterwards. He was arrested on suspicion of burglary and remains in police custody.

Acting Detective Inspector Roberts, West Area CID, said, “Thankfully officers were able to respond so quick, enabling them to catch sight of a man who matched the description of the suspect. The two officers caught up with him and detained him.

“Excellent team work between the officers on shift meant that we were able to support the victim and apprehend someone.

“The victim received treatment in hospital for his injuries; he was already frail and it was only by chance he didn’t receive more serious injuries.”
