Acton has been one of the worst affected areas of west London by the recent resurgence of the coronavirus.

There were 388 new cases reported in the W3 area in the week leading up to Christmas Eve with South Acton and East Acton seeing the highest incidence of the disease.

68 people tested positive in South Acton, more than double the previous week, leading to an infection rate per 100,000 of 866.8.

In East Acton the number of new cases also more than doubled with 99 more people infected leading to an infection rate of 818.2.

Two more people died from the virus in Acton in November bringing the toll so far to 58 in the area. Over half of these deaths occurred in the Acton Central area at the beginning of the pandemic. It is believed that they were predominantly in care homes in the area.

The average infection rate for the London Borough of Ealing is 660 per 100,000 which is below the average for London.

This is well below main east London boroughs some of which have reached levels over 1000.

The latest R number for the healthcare region of London is estimated at 1.2 to 1.5 with a daily infection growth rate range of +4% to +8% as of 24 December.

Professor Julian Redhead, Medical Director at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and Clinical Director for North West London Integrated Care System, said, “Rates of coronavirus are rising rapidly in North West London. Our intensive care units are close to capacity, more people are getting infected and unfortunately, some are losing their lives. People must strictly follow the national restrictions and public health guidance in place under Tier 4 and stay at home.

“The increase in coronavirus rates across NW London boroughs over the last seven days is a worrying picture. We would advise people to do everything they can to stay safe and protect their loved ones this Christmas.”
