Gloomy news for support offices but retail workers safe
It was announced on Thursday that Carphone Warehouse is to shed up to 450 support staff from its main office and call centres as a result of the economic climate.
Carphone Warehouse has its headquarters in North Acton in a large building in the middle of Gypsy Corner and a large number of these job cuts could affect staff working there.
Currently there are 2,000 workers in the North Acton HQ and they have all been told about the cuts. A 90 day consultation period was also announced.
According to Carphone Warehouse, no retail workers will be at risk and all of the cuts will come from support offices around the UK.
The Carphone spokeswoman said the firm was hoping to redeploy as many workers as possible to other parts of the business.
The firm agreed a deal last year with US electronics giant Best Buy to create new retail superstores around the country.
The spokeswoman added: "Our commitment to the customer is paramount, we have not placed any store roles at risk. In our ambition to transform consumer electronics across Europe with Best Buy we will also be creating 1,000 UK jobs in the next 12 months."
