Miyabi Nursery in Acton welcomed a distinguished group of visitors this week as the Mayor of Ealing, Councillor Anthony Kelly, accompanied by his wife and Councillor Seema Kumar, Chief Whip of the Conservatives in the borough, spent the morning meeting children, staff and the nursery’s founder.
The children opened the event with a song before proudly demonstrating how to make traditional Japanese maki sushi. The Mayor, his wife and Councillor Kumar joined in the activity, rolling their own sushi alongside the children and sampling the results with enthusiasm.
Speaking during the visit, the Mayor said, “I’m really delighted to be here today at Miyabi Nursery. I’ve had a wonderful time making sushi with the children and learning about what they do here each day. It’s a really lovely place. I’ve learned so much about Japanese culture, enjoyed plenty of sushi, and I’m even taking some home. Thank you very much for having me.”
The visit offered the children a rare opportunity to meet civic leaders in an informal, engaging setting. Staff explained the role of the Mayor and the importance of community leadership, helping the children understand how local government supports the area in which they live. The Mayor also signed certificates to commemorate the occasion and spent time speaking with staff about the nursery’s bilingual Japanese–English curriculum.

Miyabi Nursery has a distinctive approach to early years education. The setting blends the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework with principles drawn from Japanese educational philosophy, placing emphasis on respect, discipline, independence and cultural appreciation. Children are encouraged to develop confidence, curiosity and global awareness from their earliest years.
Miyabi Nursery is a bilingual Japanese–English early years setting in the Wasps FC grounds, serving both local and international families. The nursery integrates the EYFS curriculum with Japanese educational values to support children’s academic, social and moral development, promoting independence, cultural appreciation and a strong sense of community.
