Police Get Tough on Anti-Social Activities in Acton
New dispersal powers to move people away from the centre
A new dispersal zone has been created in the Acton Central area in a bid to cut down anti-social behaviour.
The Police and Council agree that members of the public have been intimidated, harassed, alarmed or distressed as a result of the presence or behaviour of two or more persons and that anti-social behaviour is a significant and persistent problem in the above affected area.
During the times and dates specified a Constable / PCSO can tell people to move on, tell those who don't live in the area to leave and not to return to the affected area or any part of it for a a time (not exceeding 24 hours).
Under 16's may not be allowed to be in the area between the hours of 9pm and 6am unless with a parent or responsible person over the age of 18.
Police can take the offending person back to their home - or place of safety if more appropriate.
To contravene any of these directions is an offence under Section 32 of the Anti-social Behaviour Act 2003, which is punishable by three months imprisonment and / or a fine not exceeding £2500.
Sergeant Chris Cook said:
''We believe the introduction of this dispersal zone in the area will help send a clear message to those involved in anti-social behaviour that it will not be tolerated.
It will also ensure that the area and surrounding streets remains a safe environment for those residents and members of the public, who live, work and visit their local amenities now and in the future.
Any individuals, irrespective of their age, seen to be acting in an anti social manner will be dealt with appropriately. It is important that people witnessing any anti-social behaviour in the area report it to the police immediately so the appropriate action can be taken against offenders.
At our ward forum this week we agreed that drug and alcohol related crime and disorder are our priority and the introduction of this this zone shows we have listened to the community in the area concerned and this further demonstrates that we are here to support them'.
The dispersal zone will remain in place for six months and then be reviewed.
