Hundreds of people attended a peaceful, socially distanced protest in the centre of Southall on Wednesday (3 June). Organised by Southall Resists, the demonstrators congregated on the high street and took a knee as a sign of respect to the number of black people who have been victims of police violence particularly in America. Afterwards a number of speakers including crime and justice campaigner Suresh Grover addressed the crowd.

Many others who were unable to attend the demonstration showed their support by taking a knee and posting the picture on social media.

This Tuesday and Wednesday evening, Ealing Town Hall has been lit up purple in what the council say is an act of solidarity with Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) communities around the world remembering George Floyd.

“Diversity is Ealing’s greatest asset and we proudly stand with those peacefully protesting against racism and injustice across the world.”

Mr Floyd died while being arrested by police outside a shop in Minneapolis on Monday 25 May. His death is being treated as murder and a criminal investigation is under way in the United States.
