Celebration event to conclude large scale arts project
A celebration of a large scale public art project on and around the South Acton estate takes place this month.
Acton Arts Forum and Acton Community Forum wanted to bring art and creativity to neglected parts of the estate and in 2010 they undertook a photographic project.
Some 50 prints were enlarged to 2 x 1 metres and displayed around the estate, reflecting the diverse face of the South Acton community. Last week this exhibition was rehung on hoardings on Osborne Road as part of this year’s Acton Arts Forum ‘Art Hits the Streets.’
Since 2012 the public art project has escalated in a variety of ways and 18 pieces of large scale art works can now be seen on walls throughout the estate. Residents have got involved and supported the project helping put South Acton on the street art map.
The latest addition created in 2014 was Big Mother by Stik. The tallest piece of street art in the UK, the mother and child cover the entire side of Charles Hocking House. The art can be seen from the train tracks, motorway and flight path. The art represents family and community and the characters look down over the building site opposite at the changing estate.
The upcoming celebratory event will mark the unveiling of Heritage seating area and reveal the blue plaques - commemorating the contributions of significant residents, organisations, sites and historical moments . It is also an opportunity to get everyone who had been involved in the project together.
The event will take place on Friday 29th May 2015 between 3 – 5 pm at Oaktree Community Centre (Osborne Road, W3 8SJ) where the exhibition and book can be viewed, website visited and films viewed. This will be followed by the unveiling of the Heritage sofa and the South Acton Heritage Plaques around the South Acton neighbourhood.
